An Analysis of Airline Seat Allocation

چکیده

In this paper we consider the airline seat allocation between high and low fares with and without stochastic cancellations. We also analyze the problem of simultaneously determining seat allocation and overbooking levels for two different classes of passengers, which also extends the existing literature in three ways. First, the cost oflost sales, which has been ignored in the existing literature, is explicitly incorporated into the model. Second, the overbooking phenomenon is also explicitly treated. Third, the concept of spill rate is clarified into t.he passenger spill rate and the flight rate. It is found that the results obtained here are in closer agreement with actual airline practice.

AIRLINE STOCHASTIC CAPACITY ALLOCATION BY APPLYING REVENUE MANAGEMENT

To formulate a single-leg seat inventory control problem in an airline ticket sales system, the concept and techniques of revenue management are applied in this research. In this model, it is assumed the cabin capacity is stochastic and hence its exact size cannot be forecasted in advance, at the time of planning. There are two groups of early-reserving and late-purchasing customers demanding t...

Revenue Management Games

A well-studied problem in the literature on airline revenue (or yield) management is the optimal allocation of seat inventory among fare classes given a demand distribution for each class. In the literature thus far, passenger demand is an exogenous parameter. However, the seat allocation decisions of one airline affect the passenger demands for seats on other airlines. In this paper we examine...

Revenue Management Without Forecasting or Optimization: An Adaptive Algorithm for Determining Airline Seat Protection Levels

We investigate a simple adaptive approach to optimizing seat protection levels in airline revenue management systems. The approach uses only historical observations of the relative frequencies of certain seat-filling events to guide direct adjustments of the seat protection levels in accordance with the optimality conditions of Brumelle and McGill (1993). Stochastic approximation theory is used...

A Case-Based Seat Allocation System for Airline Revenue Management

Airline companies usually implement revenue management to increase profits. The revenue management can be performed through seat inventory management. The current system to book seats is first-come first-served. This approach tends to sell low-price seats because low-price requests often appear earlier. It also results in low revenue. In this paper, an expected dynamic probability method and a ...

Purposeful underestimation of demands for the airline seat allocation with incomplete information

We study stochastic programming formulations for the origindestination model in airline seat allocation under uncertainty. In particular, we focus on solving the stability issues of the traditional probabilistic model by purposefully underestimating the demands. The stochastic seat allocation models assume at least the possession of the distributional information, which is usually difficult to ...
